What is swr?

Standing Wave Ratio

In the case of "decoupling", which occurs when the impedance of the antenna system + connection line deviates from the ideal 50Ohm, the power sent from the transmitter to the antenna is not completely radiated. Under ideal conditions, with the antenna perfectly matched, all the power emitted by the transmitter is radiated, with a SWR equal to 1. As the decoupling increases (because the system is no longer tuned to the frequency in use), the standing wave ratio grows to 2, 3 up to infinity. There is an infinite SWR when the antenna is physically disconnected from the line, the power output is returned to the transmitter and there is the risk of "burning" the power amplifier. With SWR of approximately 3, there is a progressive heating of the final stage of the transmitter, which can lead to break it in a few minutes. It’s normally considered acceptable for transmission a SWR between 1 and 1.5, although rarely you can find a SWR less than 1,2. If the SWR exceeds 2, it’s necessary to verify the connectors and the cable (which should never be shorter than 2 meters or suffer folds wider than 90 °).
